Dear Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion,
2012 has been a tremendous year for you. The Cover of Time magazine, European of the Year, Nobel Prize, UN Council seat...... You must be very satisfied with your achievements.
The truth is the Irish people bought you those accolades with their hard earned wages. By fully supporting the FF bank guarantee you took our money and handed it to the bankers and bondholders who created this entire mess: a tiny circle of gamblers who stole the wealth that the tiger created, and instead of going to jail get paid billions in compensation, by a lapdog government of cowards and parasites.
It's interesting how one word can sum up the truth about the European project, the manipulation (and, in fact, ownership) of governments by Goldman Sachs and Rothschild, the apathy of the Irish people to the treachery of its government and the use of the media to control, suppress and misdirect the truth: ICELAND
You don't agree? So what did you achieve in 2012?
Well this year we discovered that Ireland is a country where a man can freeze to death in the doorway of a supermarket in the Capital city; where a woman can be allowed to die in a hospital because the law insists on it; where families struggle to survive in an atmosphere of despair and parents fear the suicide of their children; where a grocer who fiddles €1 million in excise duty from the government is sent to jail for 6 years, while a judge who steals an old man's life savings gets two and a half years, and a solicitor who steals €52 million from ordinary families gets free legal aid; where the poor and the elderly make daily choices between hunger and hypothermia; where social welfare is a concept and a system that works for immigrant non-nationals more than Irish citizens; where the government is prepared to condemn hundreds of thousands of families to live below the poverty line with taxes and charges that do not get spent on public services but go into the black hole of Troika debt; where politicians who believe they run an entire economy don't understand the first thing about economics or real political power; and where a member of the government can, with no hint of shame, state on national television that politicians lie to get elected.
The priority of every politician in Dail Eireann is Power, Position, Privilege, Pay and Pension........ not People.
If I didn't know better, I'd say we were living in Stalinist Russia.
And the solution the government proposed is more jobs. Not much creative thinking there then..., Jobs, not people and they are happy to use the numbers of employed versus unemployed as a measure of their performance and success.
But there are more real measurements of the state of the country: the number living (and dying) below the poverty line (many of them with jobs); the number of people emigrating in search of a life and a future; and the number of people taking their own lives (many with jobs) because they don't believe they have a future and don't have the possibility of emigrating.
This will be the legacy of Irish governments in the 21st century.
So while I can't see much to celebrate, I am looking forward to The Gathering in 2013. I don't agree with Gabriel Byrne's assessment of the project as an exercise in the shakedown of returning ex-pats. I believe The Gathering is a tremendous opportunity for our young people to hear how honest hard work is rewarded in America, Australia, Canada and elsewhere, where the grass IS actually greener. Congratulations - never has there been a more brilliant marketing strategy for emigration. I will certainly be encouraging my children to find hope, happiness, success, recognition, reward and a better life far from home.
At least you have made an effort to keep the numbers emigrating ahead of the numbers taking their own lives ..... but be assured, in the years to come, both these figures will be your legacy.
Merry Christmas.
p.s. When you're eating your Christmas dinner remember - we paid for it.

*since writing this and on the same day I stood outside Leinster House to remember those who never made it to Christmas 2012 because they ended their own lives, Shane McEntee TD (56) added his name to the list of victims. I will not be wrong about my predictions, unless things change soon.
